Tennoji Ward is one of the districts in Osaka City with the densest concentration of temples, shrines, and old sloped streets, centered around Shitennoji, one of Japan's oldest Buddhist temples. Around Yuhigaoka, a set of named slopes known as Tennoji Nanazaka (the seven slopes of Tennoji) connects the temple grounds, letting visitors walk between them along narrow, historic paths.
Around Tennoji Park, a different atmosphere takes over, with Tenshiba, Tennoji Zoo, the Osaka City Museum of Fine Arts, and the Japanese garden Keitakuen all clustered together. Several spots, such as Sanko Shrine and Shinganji, are tied to the history of the Siege of Osaka and the figure of Sanada Yukimura, adding a layer of historical interest to the temple-hopping route.

The Temple and Slope Area
Around Shitennoji, temples and shrines such as Anguji Shrine, Ikutama Shrine, Aizendo Shomanin, Taiheiji, Manpukuji, Enjuan, Shinganji, Kichijoji, Shitennoji Koshindo, and Horikoshi Shrine sit within walking distance of one another. The Tennoji Nanazaka slopes, including Kuchinawa-zaka and Tenjin-zaka, weave through this district, offering stone-paved paths lined with temple walls.
Sanko Shrine, home to a statue of Sanada Yukimura, and nearby Shinganji are often visited together as sites connected to the Siege of Osaka. Otenin stands out as a temple that also functions as a theater and event space. Since the route involves repeated uphill and downhill walking, comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
Tennoji Park and Its Surroundings
Tenshiba, Tennoji Zoo, the Osaka City Museum of Fine Arts, Keitakuen, Chausuyama, and the old Kuroda Clan warehouse gate (Kyu-Kuroda-han Kura-yashiki Nagayamon) are all located within or right next to Tennoji Park. Within this single park area, visitors can spend time at the zoo, view art at the museum, or stroll through the Japanese garden at Keitakuen, mixing different kinds of activities in one visit.
