Higashiosaka City sits at the eastern edge of the Osaka plain, rising up the western slopes of the Ikoma mountain range. Known mainly as a manufacturing hub, it also holds a cluster of old shrines, temples, kofun-related sites and castle ruins along its hillside, and is well connected by several Kintetsu rail lines to central Osaka and Nara.

Shrines and Nature Along the Ikoma Foothills
Along the western foot of the Ikoma mountains in eastern Higashiosaka, shrines and temples such as Ishikiri Tsurugiya Jinja, Hiraoka Jinja, Wakae Kagami Jinja, Hyotanyama Inari Jinja, Jikoji Temple and Ojoin Rokumanji Temple line up one after another. Many are within walking distance of stations on the Kintetsu Nara Line or Keihanna Line, making it easy to combine several visits on foot.
Head further uphill and you reach Mount Ikoma itself, along with the Prefectural Forest areas of Narukawa, Nukata and Kusaka, plus Hiraoka Park. Kuragari Pass, straddling the border with Nara Prefecture, sits within the same mountain range and suits those wanting a taste of an old mountain pass road. Paths here mix paved sections with rougher mountain trails, so wear comfortable walking shoes.
Lowland Highlights: Sports and History
In the western part of the city, Hanazono Central Park sits next to Higashiosaka Hanazono Rugby Stadium, a good area for combining a match visit with a stroll around the grounds. Nagase Jinja, Mito Jinja and the Wakae Castle Ruins lie within residential neighborhoods, offering compact glimpses of local history. Konoike Shinden Kaisho preserves the history of Edo-period land reclamation, while the Shiba Ryotaro Memorial Museum houses materials related to the novelist—both best visited as standalone destinations separate from the hillside route.
