Getting into Tokyo looks complicated, but the choice usually makes itself once you decide what matters most: speed, price, or not hauling your suitcase up stairs. This page lays out every major option from both airports with actual fares and times.

From Haneda: it's basically Keikyu vs. the Monorail
Haneda's great advantage is how close it is to the city. By rail you have two choices — the Keikyu Line (toward Shinagawa) or the Tokyo Monorail (toward Hamamatsucho) — and both connect you to the JR Yamanote loop line in about 20 minutes for a few hundred yen. Rule of thumb: staying around Shinagawa, Shibuya or Yokohama, take Keikyu; around Tokyo Station or Ginza, take the Monorail.
If you have two or more suitcases, small children, or just want to be dropped at your hotel door, the Airport Limousine Bus is honestly the easiest option — no stairs, no transfers, and it stops right outside major hotels.

Cheapest fast option. Through-trains continue onto the Toei Asakusa subway line for Nihonbashi and Asakusa without transfer.

From Narita: Skyliner for speed, the TYO-NRT bus for price
Narita is about 60 km from central Tokyo, so your choice matters more here. The fastest ride is the Keisei Skyliner — as little as 36 minutes to Nippori, all seats reserved. If you want a one-seat ride to Shinjuku or Shibuya, take JR's Narita Express (N'EX) instead.
On a budget, the Airport Bus TYO-NRT to Tokyo Station is the cheapest mainstream option at ¥1,500 one way (confirmed on the official site, 2026-08-29). Many departures need no reservation and buses leave every 10–20 minutes through the day — just allow a margin for traffic.
The middle path is Keisei's Access Express: no express surcharge, less than half the Skyliner fare, and it runs through onto the subway toward Asakusa and Nihonbashi with no transfer.
